The Pioneer Colony of Nashville, Indiana offers a unique combination of history, art and specialty shops. Often referred to as The Art Colony of the Midwest™, Nashville is home to artists from a spectrum of media -- painting, glass blowing, pottery, woodwork, metalwork, and more. Artists' studios are open to public visits, and in some cases, are included in scheduled tours throughout Brown County studios and galleries.

Nashville's roots are mostly agricultural, originally providing principally leather, wheat, pork, hogs, horses, cattle, mules, hoop-poles, etc. Back in 1836, when Nashville was originally founded as Jacksonburg, within the county were eight tanneries, carrying on business to the amount of $50,000 annually, and employing twenty-five hands; five cabinet and two wagon shops, five house carpenters, seven shoemakers, seven blacksmiths, four stores, five groceries, one lawyer, three physicians and eight preachers, and there were eight schools with about 160 scholars. Since then, Brown County and Nashville have grown with the times. While many farms and agricultural businesses still remain, we can also find a state-of-the-art Career Resource Center, complete with computer workstations connected to the internet via T-1, two-way conferencing and distance learning opportunities.

Even with the technological advancements, residents and visitors still enjoy the adventures in the rugged wilderness -- backpacking and hiking at the Brown County State Park, kayaking the local creeks or the Monroe Reservior, and horse rides on picturesque trails through the hills. Several tour companies in Nashville and Brown County offer day trips, weekend trips, and even week-long adventures.

If the rugged outdoors is not to your liking, perhaps the quaint and charming stores of Nashville are more your style. Local arts, crafts and flavors can be found. Many delicious treats are made right in Nashville, including homemade fudge, caramel apples and fried biscuits. Whatever your tastes may be, Nashville has over 30 restaurants and snack shops to choose from. You may even find the next culinary genius "cutting his teeth" on a student residency at a local restaurant - be sure to sample everything!
